DEVELOPMENT/MAJOR GIFTS DIRECTOR
With 150 professionally trained Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, and Firefighters–men and women who respond to almost 11,000 emergency calls per year–the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad (BCCRS) has evolved into one of the nation’s most advanced rescue squads, providing no-cost compassionate, lifesaving ambulance and rescue services. The Squad’s accomplishments have garnered national attention and include the first human "save" of a victim in a fire using an innovative thermal imaging system, and the first Paramedic in the state of Maryland. The Rescue Squad celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1990 with a visit by President George H.W. Bush, who recognized the Squad for its progressive and outstanding service to the community.
The Rescue Squad does not receive an appropriated budget from any government and raises almost all of its operating revenue from community donations, including an annual campaign the Squad has conducted for 66 years. The Squad’s established base of support, which includes individuals, foundations, and businesses, reflects a trusted relationship that the Squad has nurtured with the communities of Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Maryland and Upper Northwest Washington, D.C., since 1937.
